What the First Month of School Reveals About Your SLP Coverage

The first month of school is many things …  exciting, chaotic, hopeful, exhausting. But for special education directors, it is also revealing.

By the end of September, you know things you didn't know in July. You know which students have more complex needs than anticipated. You know which caseloads are too heavy. And sometimes, you know you have a gap you didn't plan for.

The August Illusion

There's a particular kind of optimism that comes with the start of a new school year. Schedules are set, contracts are signed, and it feels like everything is in order. But August is a snapshot, and snapshots don't always tell the whole story.

Families move. Students are referred mid-year. An SLP goes on leave. A caseload that looked manageable in theory becomes overwhelming in practice. September has a way of surfacing what August couldn't predict.

What We Hear From Directors in September

"We thought we were covered, but we have three students on the waitlist with no one to serve them."

"Our SLP took a leave, and we're scrambling."

"We onboarded a contractor, and it's just not working — the fit isn't right."

What Good SLP Coverage Actually Looks Like

Good coverage isn't just having a warm body in the role. It's having the right clinician; one who communicates with families, collaborates with teachers, writes defensible IEPs, and actually connects with students.
