This is the time of year when many districts begin their search for SLP staffing for the upcoming school year.
The scarcity of licensed and credentialed SLPs is a nationwide challenge. The ASHA Leader documents there are 56 ASHA-certified SLPs nationwide for every 100,000 residents (2022). The western states of Nevada, Hawaii, and California have the fewest (28 to 40 per 100,000 residents). The challenge will likely continue as the Cal State SLP graduate schools have admission rates in the single digits, accepting less than 50 students each year.
We understand the desire for districts looking to fill their vacancies with in-person SLPs. However, the data helps us to understand why this is an ongoing challenge that in-person-only staffing agencies can’t solve. There are not enough SLPs in California to meet the demand. It is a game of musical chairs….at the start of the school year, many districts are left without a chair.
The good news is there is evidence to support teletherapy. ASHA’s evidence maps support the efficacy of telepractice. One example: Systematic Review of School Telehealth Evaluations (2019) "Three studies evaluating telehealth treatment of speech sound disorders found that telehealth outcomes were equivalent or somewhat better than traditional treatment, depending on outcome measurement" (p. 67).
Teletherapy offers the flexibility of staffing your district from outside your area.
